Successful expansion of Labelpak is set out in print

28 September 2010 - Industry-leading labeling solutions provider, Labelpak, is ensuring that it stays one step ahead of its competitors after purchasing a state-of-the-art printing press that is capable of increasing productivity by more than 25%.

Due to a spike in demand for its products and services, Labelpak made the decision to purchase the revolutionary MPS Printing Press - a 9-colour, 16 inch UV flexographic press that is capable of producing labels in record time by making use of innovative servo drive technology.

Using a special electronic amplifier, servo drive technology monitors feedback signals from the servo motor in order to continually adjust for deviation from expected behaviour; thereby, detecting unwanted motion and ensuring pinpoint accuracy and efficiency.

Labelpak director Mark Sherriff explains: “Having been overwhelmed with demand in production towards the end of last year, we made the decision to purchase the MPS machine in order to facilitate our expansion. The major advantage of this high-speed machine is that it’s capable of handling our largest orders, which takes the pressure off our machines.”

Sherriff points out that the MPS Press, imported from the Netherlands, enables Labelpak to expand its already-impressive portfolio to include products such as silk screening, flexible packaging materials, printing back-and -front on adhesives and hot foiling.

“This machine will open up a whole new market for us, and we will be able to give increased focus to flexible packaging, which will encompass wraparound labels and sachets. The MPS provides more dexterity to produce labels, and offers a far quicker turnaround time, ultimately saving costs and reducing wastage. This means that Labelpak will be the only company in South Africa capable of producing all printing processes at one facility, effectively making us a one-stop-shop,” says Sherriff.

While the advantages of the MPS Printing Press are numerous, Sherriff admits that Labelpak has faced a number of challenges in bringing the new machine to the South African market.

“A sophisticated machine of this nature requires an additional electricity supply, so we had to place it in a separate factory adjacent to where the other machines are kept,” explains Sherriff. “We also have to make sure that it is kept in an environmentally-controlled room that is dust-free with a set humidity. Training is also required to operate the machine, and we currently have two staff members who are fully trained.”

Sherriff concludes by pointing out that Labelpak has seen a rise in performance compared to 2009, a trend which he expects to continue as the market recovers from the effects of the recession.
